The last 24 hours of 2007 for me has been extremely busy. So busy in fact, that I have not found the time to finish writing my Top 10 albums blog. So ya'll gotta wait until tommorrow for the list. But quickly, there's something I noticed this morning.
I awoke around 7:00 A.M this morning and saw that today brought a beautiful sunrise. I mean, real talk, this image was absolutely gorgeous. Maybe this is a sign of things to come. This next year, 2008, is not going to be A year... it's going to be THE YEAR. I feel change is a coming like Sam Cooke. I am ready for it. So, I'm going to leave ya'll with a jam I have been bangin' all day...

We are getting closer and closer 2008 as you read this. So with the end of every year, comes our lists for our favorite things. Well, coming tommorrow, is my 10 ten list of my favorite albums this year. But before I give you my list. I wanted to give a quick list of couple albums I enjoyed this year that just missed the list...
1) Sa-Ra: The Hollywood Recordings (Babygrande Records)
Three of the greatest have co-signed. Kanye has co-signed. Dr. Dre has co-signed. J Dilla co-signed. These cats are the truth, possibly the future, and honestly, like nothing else in Hip-Hop, let alone music today. Aside from working the boards for Talib ("Space Fruit"), Jill Scott ("Breathe") and on Erykah Badu's upcoming L.P this year, Sa-Ra dropped "The Hollywood Recordings," 19-Tracks of funked out, souled out.... spaced out music, featuring an all star list artists (Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, Kurupt, Pharaohe Monch, J Dilla, among others). Advice, come with an open mind before listening to this one. Rewind Material:
2) Consequence- Don't Quit Your Day Job (G.O.O.D Music/Red Ink/Columbia Records)
This one was a long time coming. Orignially debuting as the fourth member of A Tribe Called Quest (if your counting Jarobi, he would be the 5th) on their fourth L.P, "Beats, Rhymes, & Life," Consequence (who is also Tribe member Q-Tip's cousin)made his recording debut. Upon and after the release of "Beats," their where complains of this new member that could have and did disrupt the on-mic chemistry between Phife Dawg and Q-Tip (like some critics complained of the new production style assisted by a up and coming producer by the name of Jay Dee).
But after years it's release, it is safe (and politically correct) to recognize that Cons was a vital tread within that album. I mean, how can you front on his show stealing verse on the 2nd single, "Stressed Out?" But two years later, Tribe broke up, and Consequence disappeared from the scene.
But Cons would soon find make grand return via appearances on Kanye West's first two L.Ps, "College Dropout" ("Spaceship") and "Late Registration" ("Gone"). With Consequence catching the ear of a new generation of Hip-Hop heads, Cons took the experiences of his post-Tribe occupations and made it the foundational theme of his solo debut, "Don't Quit Your Day Job."
Co-Executive Produced by 'Ye, "Don't" is just dope Hip-Hop record from start to finish. From the dope "Nautilus" flip on "Job Song" to breakbeat B-Boy flava on "Callin' Me," to the celebratory Kanye produced "Grammy Family" (feat. John Legend), Cons lyrically shines everytime he steps up to the mic. His best lyrical showing is on the Karriem Riggins produced "Uncle Rahiem," in which Cons tells the story of newly released Uncle and the hell he raises once he moves into Cons's and his Moms' home.
You can't talk about this album without mentioning the hilarious skits, which details and continues the album's storyline of Cons' first day working at a department store ("Quincy Jones. 'Ya Mama' I heard that!!!! LOL!!). With a sold debut solo L.P and various mixtapes under his belt, Consequence may be on track for a promising 2008. Rewind Material
Yeah I know, this track is damn near 4 years old (it was originally intented "College Dropout), but it still bangs.
3) Oh-No- Dr. No's Oxperiment (Stones Throw Records)
It's been a busy year for L.A based indie label, Stones Throw Records. National tours through the NBA 2K8 Bounce Tour, Label president Peanut Butter Wolf's 7 DJ gigs in 7 days in L.A, the release many dope albums such as Madlib's Beat Konducta Vol. 3-4, The Zombie B-Ball Compilation, Percee P's Perseverance and the re-release of J Dilla's underground and hard to find classic, "Ruff Draft."
But among all that, came the Sophomore release of Producer/MC Oh No. With "Dr. No's Oxperiment," not does Oh No steps out of the shadow of his big brother Madlib, but delivers Stones Throw's best release of 2007 (yes, in my imo, it's better than Beat Konducta Vol. 3-4).
Sampling from a diverse collection styles and genres, Oh No takes tracks from Turkish, Labanese, Greek and Italian Rock & funk records, and transforms them with Optimus Prime precision into 28 knocking instrumentals. I can't even verbally describe these beats to you, you just gotta listen to them for yourself. "Dr. No's Oxperiment" is a sonic gem, point blank. Chuck D of iconic group Public Enemy says he is the person for the job. "After 10 years looking on the collapsing of the record industry, and upon hearing the news of Jay-Z stepping down from Def Jam, I would throw my name into the hat of somebody who understands how the hell Universal should establish the name-brands they acquire with stockholders money."
"So instead of me running for politics, this is an easier run into the world of influential culture," he continued. "I'm in Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York on the regular as well as I [thoroughly understand] the international picture," Chuck said. "There would be some seismic changes, and I would be a little Huey Long-ish at it. If folks are clueless about this parallel that's precisely the problem." Jermaine Dupri, Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond and Damon Dash have all been mentioned as potential candidates for the position.
Chuck D outlined his plan for Def Jam, as seen below: 1)Being ahead of the technology curve; preparing for a thinned out industry; and managing budget efficient acts is very noteworthy of my resume which is simple. I told these cats the online revolution was coming and they needed big adjustments. They relied on lawyers, courts, and accountants only to now look upward at Apple, etc.
2)Their cost factors didn't fit the times, I come from a world where the $50,000 investments resulted into 6 - 7 figures. Now it's a business where 7 figures are invested to make 6.
3)I would run it like sports. These artists would be busting their tails on tour and on the stage to gain a fan. They would be coached on how to do their thing right. Braintrust will be high, and subcontracting to the right contributors will be comparable of the efficiency of these labels like Jazz and catalog departments. You cannot have people working, that haven't the slightest clue of what they are in the middle of.
4)Any criminal mindedness in artistry, and management would have sit this one out, go their own way. It's like bad apples the long run ain't got nothing to do with entertainment. You can't mix the stage and off stage parodies.
As much as I would LOVE to see this happen, we all know that more than likely, unfortunately, Jermaine Dupri is going to get the job. Def Jam has, for the most part, turned into an R&B label. Although Def Jam, to Hov's credit, has put out some of the best Hip-Hop albums in the past two years. But they want more of a R&B label dude. And a dude who is not going to bump heads with L.A Reid.
Now, if there are going to move all their R&B acts (Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Christete, etc) to Def Soul and let Def Jam become a FULL HIP-HOP label again, then this could work. But overall, Chuck's ideas is what the industry needs, but is scare to apply yet. But we will see what happens. This could get intresting.

(From Allhiphop.com) Cam'ron's crew, The Diplomats recently popped up in an unlikely place: a Disney album. A series of songs from Dip Set's freshman effort, Diplomatic Immunity were found on Disney's Disney Channel Hits CD instead of Hannah Montana tracks. News of the explicit songs surfaced yesterday after a Sacramento family purchased the CD for their daughters. The Dips music found its way to another Disney CD in when Orlando's WESH 2 revealed that a grandmother in the area gave the CD to her granddaughter for Christmas. The grandmother received the CD as a promotional item from a local Toys R Us. When contacted about the issue of the explicit lyrics, Toys R Us responded, saying the retail chain is "only a distributor" and heard about the news when the story originally broke. As of press time, Disney has not commented but has pulled the CD from store shelves.

As a person who competed for 6 years in Speech & Debate (2 in years in Junior High and 4 years in High School) this movie brought back some old memories. More than anything, it reminded me when I was trying to prove myself in these competitions when it was rare to see a face that looked mine. 2005-2006 Loyola High School Debate Team (My senior year)
It is common knowledge that a stereotype of Blacks are we are "unintellgent" and "non-well spoken." So when one may meet or compete again a person who defies that stereotype, it's a total shock. What these characters where trying and did do (and this based on a true story) was defy those sterotypes. Stereotypes that still exist today. Stereotypes that are still trying to be fully broken.
Denzel's character in the movie stated that "Debate is like war. Words is your weapons." I couldn't agree more. I believe knowledge and knowing how to apply that knowledge can give one unbelievable power. It is in our decision and responsiblity in how we use it.
The primary co-curricular activity I wanted be a part of in high school was basketball. I wanted to play if front of hundreds (possibly thousands if we made the championship) of people. I wanted to make my mark. Turns out I would get cut ALL four years. For a while, maybe for most of my high school career, it was hard for me to deal with the fact that I was just going to be a spectator. Sometimes it was tuff for me to go to games and watch my homeboys (many of my closest friends where on the team) have fun on that court.
But as it would turn out, as I would find out later, the activity I ended up competing in for those four years would assist me more now that playin ball. The knowledge, the history, the skills, everything I learned in Speech and Debate I still use today. It has come in handy in business, it has come in handy in journalism and writing, and it has even helped me as in MC. It has helped me in basic day to day life. I also loved the traveling aspect of it as well. Going to places I normally would not have gone to went competing.
Bottom line, I loved this movie. I highly recommended it. It made me reflect and think on various things beyond debating and my high school years. My thoughts can be boiled down to this:
Life is a battlefield, what is your gift or weapon for betterment?
One of the dopest, BUT hard to find mixtapes ever!!! Back around 2004, Pete & 9th did this instrumental album together called "Class Is In Session" and I still can't find that joint. I've only found bits and pieces. But this one right here bangs, with a little help from Phonte on the mic.

Personally, in the last couple years, I have really gotten into The PR. Hailing from Illadelphia (Word To The Roots), the duo of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince is one of the reasons why Hip-Hop is so worldwide today. Let's run down their resume... 1) 11 Albums Deep (Combining their group and solo albums) Millions of records sold. 2) First Hip-Hop grammy (In 1989, for Parents Just Don't Understand) 3) Along with Ice Cube and Kid & Play, paved the way for Hip-Hop artists in acting. Will is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood today. As a matter of fact, he just implanted his hands in front of Mann's Chinese Theatre this week. 4) Jeff (along with DJ Cash Money) developed the "Transformer" scratch 5) Jeff is one biggest draws as a DJ for parties, as he still tours worldwide.

My favorite track on the album This track made me a fan of J Live as well.
It been reported when Will is promoting his new movie "Hancock" this summer, he and Jeff will embark on a world tour. It's has also rumored that he will Jeff will record an album together. I hoping for that one.
Now to make this come full circle, I forgot my homeboy put this up on Youtube. This was H.F.P.'s VERY FIRST show. This was last November @ school. It was myself, A.D, and Paul, with Dre as the DJ. The song we were perfoming was called "With Us (Close Your Eyes" from our H.F.P's first group LP, "Fall 2 Greatness."
The funny thing about that show was there technically was not a sound engineer, so you can see me running back and forth during the performance trying to balance out the mics, lol!! Plus, Paul pulled his hamstring that day in swimming class, so that is why he could not move as much around stage. Plus the stage was small was no bigger than 10-12 feet.
Oh, small little bonus for male readers, this is a Pepsi commerical I found with J. Lo & Beyonce which I believe is from Egypt. Hey, this is a party, I had bring some 25pieces (yeah, I said they are 25 pieces, not dimes, lol).
I was thinking about this video today. And although I had a good laugh like everyone else watching this, I also thought to myself, this is the reason why MCs can't battle anymore, ESPECIALLY on record. People be taking things to personal. During my childhood, Monday night, 9 P.M, Thursday night, 8 P.M and then watch all the highlights during the weekends at 10:00 A.M Saturday and Sunday (Sunday if I didn't go church that day). Even though to this day I'm still a pro wrestling fan, it's not the same as when it was during the "Attitude" Era (1997-2004). The two superstars that represent that era more than anyone would be "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, and this dude right here, "The People's Champ," The Rock.
And while the Rock's matches (especially when they were with Austin) were instant classics, what was even more classic was his promos. In pro wrestling terms, promos were when each wrestler had their chance to talk shit about the his or her opponent. And when it comes to promos, NO ONE delivered like The Rock. To this day, these clips still me cry outta laughter...

UGK group member Chad “Pimp C” Butler was found dead in a hotel room this morning, according to reports. Firefighters responded to a 911 call placed from the Mondrian Hotel on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California. The rapper was found dead in his bed in a sixth floor hotel room. 1. A 3-5 page paper on a marine species for Marine Bio (with powerpoint presentation)(and I can't find shit on this species. I think I'm going to change species). 2. 2 Communication research papers (5 Pages long). 3. 4 Chapters of European History to finish reading and study sheets (Chapter are about 35 pages a piece). 5. Reviewing 9 Chapters of Communication For The Final 6. Close to relearning everything in Marine Bio for the final (which is my first final) 7. A History Final Study Sheet to fill out. 8. Pages and PAGES of Anthropology to read for the final (and an assignment to finish) 9. AND ON TOP OF ALL THAT..... getting things squared away for transfering to my 4 year university (I attend a Private 2 year right now). So that means I have to go through this bullshit again!!! Apps, getting my recommendations straight, transcrips, essays, personal statements, all that shit.
