Pull Out The Umbrellas, It's Raining Cats And Dogs

Already??!??!!? Yep, Dilated Peoples' member Evidence is wasting no time following up one of the best (and one of my personal favorite) albums of last year, The Weatherman LP. The sequel Cats And Dogs, is dropping this fall according to Ev in this video. This, plus Rakaa's solo debut Crown of Thorns, AND a new Dilated LP down the pipeline means we're not going to be short of Expansion Team music anytime soon.

Sumthin' Gotta Give

The first video of Outkast's Big Boi first solo LP, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty. The joints called Sumthin' Gotta Give featuring Mary J. Blige.

Sidenote- Check the video @ 0:19. I'm reading $7.35 for unleaded gas in Atlanta!?!?!?!? Man, and I thought L.A had it bad.

According to Big, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty should be dropping sometime between late September and early October.

Peace Sign/Index Down

Just within the last year I have become a Gym Class Heroes fan. Knew of there music, but the track "New Friend Request" from As Cruel As School Children got me open. If you have not, I highly recommend you pick up that album. The MC of the group, Travis, is slepted on (listen close, he's nice on the mic) and has been making guest appearances on other records. For example, its been reported that he and 9th Wonder has started a group named The Goonies.

This is the first single from there 3rd LP The Quilt, dropping September 9th, Peace Sign/Index Down featuring Busta Rhymes, who KILLS his guest verse!!! I will be checking for them when they tour with The Roots and Estelle in the fall.

Uptown Saturday Night

Luchini

Coolie High

Just saw these two videos on MTV Jams just now and though it was so necessary to post these.

(From Wikipedia.Org)
Uptown Saturday Night is the debut album from hip hop group Camp Lo. Throughout the album, the group displays a style that is heavily influenced by 1970s pop culture. The title is a reference to the 1974 film Uptown Saturday Night. The album debuted at #27 on the Billboard 200, and featured the hit single "Luchini AKA This Is It". The title of their debut single "Coolie High" is a reference to the 1975 film Cooley High. The album cover was inspired by Ernie Barnes' painting The Sugar Shack which was used as the cover of Marvin Gaye's 1976 album I Want You and in the credits sequence of the 1970s sitcom Good Times. The music video for the album's final single, "Black Nostaljack", featured Jimmie Walker and Bern Nadette Stanis reprising their Good Times characters of J.J. and Thelma Evans.

Camp Lo recently just put a new LP last July entitled Black Hollywood.

"so if you ain't bustin' down, please disperse"
The final video off Cons' debut LP, Don't Quit Your Day Job, Disperse, featuring GLC and Really Doe. In having a convo with Key and P the other night, we started talking about this album. Key had never heard it, so P and I decided we should start with this song. This is one off my favorites of the album.

Check the cameos by Lupe, The Neptunes, 'Ye and many others.

Milton:: Just a little bit, just no video games for a whole week.

Homeboy On Films: The Dark Knight, Hancock, And Step Brothers

Been a little lazy with the entries this week (sorry... WON'T happen again), but here are some of the flicks I've seen in the last week.

The movie everyone has been waiting for all summer. Does it live up to the hype? In short, yes and then some. The movie is dark, gritty, in your face, and once it starts, you will not be able to take your eyes off the screen. Excellent performance by everyone... Heath Ledger, point blank, stole the "whole fucking show" (c) Rob Van Dam. There are some many memorable quotes and scenes by him in this movie. He was so sinister, it was comedy. As a matter of fact, my homegirl just got outta the movie and is talking my ear off on the phone about about it (hi Gina, lol!!!). Best movie of the summer, hands down, and maybe the movie of the year. I don't know how the fuck there gonna top this shit for the third installment.

Summertime equals another blockbuster jumpoff from The Fresh Prince. Real talk, while this movie did an excellent first week (over $100 Mil @ the box office), it's been catching a lot of flack of being wack by critics and viewers. However, I personally loved the movie. Over the top action with classic Will Smith humor. It was dope to see Will switch it up a bit and act like a complete... well, I best not say the word (if you have seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about). However, there are some intresting racial undertones about the movie I noticed. I would talk about them here, but I don't want to give the movie away for anyone who has not seen it yet. Just know it's nothing bad, but it sure as hell speaks volumes. Overall, dope summer flick.

I just saw this tonight. This shit, from beginning to end, was a fucking riot. Will Ferrell and John Reily are some FOOLS in this yo. I don't even wanna give it way, just go see it yo.

IT'S HERE!!!!

Those where my exact words when I saw the site link for the new 9th Wonder And Murs album entitled, Sweet Lord. And to clarify, this is a FREE album. BUT... there's a catch, I'll let Murs tell you for himself.

As I type this, I've haven't listened to the album yet, so I can't give you my complete review. However, from the three tracks I have heard so far (I have been singing the hook to "Nina Ross" for the past 4 days straight), Sweet Lord can stand beside Murs 3:16 and Murray's Revenge.

"I'm Right Here, And I Ain't Going Nowhere!!!"

The offical video for one of the most played tracks of N.E.R.D's new album, Seeing Sounds, Spazz. The joint is a strip down black and white performance type video. Honestly, this could be the best way visually to protray this track. It's a high energy, loose your mind record.

If you still have not copped Seeing Sounds, don't sleep, cop it now!!!!

They Say We...

N.I.G.G.E.R. (The Slave And The Master) - Nas
Does this is album live up the hype. Yep, and then some. Lyrically, Nas has damn near summarized the status quo mindset of Black America in one LP. And the production, while not featuring many big name producers, is better than you may think. One of the best of the year.

"I'm Funky Like Some Collargreens."

This was most like shot around 1992/1993 during the The Chronic and Doggystyle sessions. It's Tha Dogg Pound, Snoop, Nate Dogg on the smooth adlibs, and Dr. Dre on the piano. Can you name the two famous piano melodies that he is playing? They are both Hip-Hop staples.

Flowology Vol. 1- Evolution (Intro)

Many people have the mentality of "if I don't tell my story, then who will?" Well that is the mentality I have regarding not only myself, but also my company. Which is why I have decided to start this blog entry series entitled "Flowology." The purpose of this series is to give you the reader (and hopefully, the listener) the background stories behind some of my favorite cuts from past H.F.P releases. Regardless if you just joined us with the Class Is In Session E.P, or have been riding with us since the $1.99 Office Depot plastic slip case days of Hip-Hophilosophy Vo1. 1, these entries are not only designed to explain our growth as artists, but our growth as men through the music; as well as provide some entertaining (and sometimes comedic) reading material about some brothas just trying to make good music. So let's start where the "evolution" began…

Don't Rush Me

Jean Grae - "Don't Rush Me" SXSW 2008 from gregthedude on Vimeo.
This song has been on repeat for the last week. I have yet to cop Jeanus yet (insufficient funds ya know?), but with a dollar left on a itunes gift card, I wanted to purchase a track from the album to hold me over until I can cop the full LP. After the 30 second preview clip, I was sold. This joint is a crazy. This is Jean performing it @ SXSW festival in Austin TX.

"I can give a fuck if that you framed that or quote it/ I meant what I said 'cause I wrote it, point note it."

Jeanus is in stores now.

Shm... Jesse, Jesse, Jesse.

I don't care what anyone says. Jesse is not stupid. He made be old and senile, but he's not stupid. Jesse has been in the media spotlight for close to 40+ years and knows about turning off your mic when the camera's stop rolling. You can't tell me he didn't do this shit on purpose for some attention. Plus, it not just the fact that Jesse is still salty in regards to losing his presidential bid in 1984, but if you follow Jesse and Obama, you know really there ideologies is the true conflict.

Jesse, during his whole career has always been one to "rely on the government." Meaning he believes that the entire reason why Black people are in still are not equal in America, is because the government does not support us. Does our government truly give a damn about Blacks? Not that much.

HOWEVER, in that same era where most of Jesse career was made, groups such as The Black Panthers brought forth the ideas of personal responsibility for self and for our communities. Meaning, we can't really on anyone else, we gotta do this on our own. The reality is, even today, the government does have the power to assist the American people, but ultimately, that change has to be conceived and nurtured BY THE PEOPLE. This is the Obama's point of view.

And you know where Jesse is, Al is right behind him.

"We don't sit up and say what do you think about this one? We don't gossip like that.." BULL-SHIT!!! There is no way you can possibly defend this shit. These niggas are backpedding more than Deion Sanders.

Honestly, this whole this is one big "nigga moment" caught on nation television. Can be summed up into one image that has been real cause of why we, as a people, are still not on the same page...

West West Ya'll

This summer will see releases from many well known and up and coming West Coast's MCs.

The legendary Ice Cube will be dropping his eight solo album entitled "Raw Footage." From what I heard so far, Cube can't do no wrong with this album. Here is the latest video from the album, "Do Ya Thang." Raw Footage drops August 19.
Do Ya Thang (Download Link)

The Game will be releasing his 3rd album L.A.X. late August. The latest record to find it's way to the internet is the 1500 or Nuthin produced "Dope Boys" featuring Travis Barker (of Blink 182/+44 fame) holdin it down on drums.

Hailing From Carson, Bishop Lamont is the latest Protégé from Dr. Dre. After making serious noise with a series of mixtapes over the last two years, His debut, The Reformation is slated for a November 2008 release. This is the first single off the album, "Grow Up," produced by The Good Doctor. I love the message in this song.

Bishop Lamont- Grow Up (Produced By Dr. Dre) (Download Link)
Grow Up [Prod. by Dr. Dre] - Bishop Lamont
"Niggas' still crusin' Crenshaw at 36/Ya wife at home, you wasting gas, tryin' to bust a bitch/At club, acting young, wear the wrong shit/Thinkin' you Chris Brown but you look like Keith Sweat bitch." LMFAO!!!! This is real talk.

Last but not least is Producer/Musician/MC Terrace Martin. Growing up in Westside section of L.A (Inglewood, Crenshaw, Slauson area, Culver City, according to him. Which are some of my own stomping grounds), and attending Locke High School, Terrance has been a crucial part of Snoop in-house production team and touring band, and has released his own mixtape entitled Signal Flow. He preparing his next tape with DJ Drama entitled Locke High. The first track of it is "Bounce Rock Skate" featuring Snoop, Kurupt, and a show stealing verse From DJ Quik.

I got ahold of this song late April and have been wearing out ever since. As a matter of fact, I loved this song so much, I played the DJ Skee tagged version at a Basketball game I was DJing at school about a week later, and I NEVER.... EVER play tagged versions of songs at gigs. Here is what went behind the track according to Terrace via a interview by Dubcnn.com

Terrace Martin- Bounce, Rock, Stake (feat. Snoop, Quik, And Kurupt) (Download Link)
Bounce, Rock, Skate (feat. Snoop Dogg, DJ Quik, & Kurupt) - Terrace Martin,
Dubcnn: Tell us about the "Bounce, Rock, Skate" track with Snoop Dogg, Kurupt and DJ Quik, how was the recording session to that?
T.M: The recording went like this. First all I had was the drums, just "boom, clap, boom, clap", you know? I kind of wanted to do a type of record that when you closed your eyes you could picture going to a dope dope club in New York City late at night, where it's real small, and all you hear is claps with phases on it and big bass drums going off. I had that picture in my head and I wanted you to see that through the sound. That's all I had on my drum machine for like a month, "boom, clap, boom, clap".

Then, I got heavily influenced by that Kanye West album man. Listening to that and how he experimented with vintage keyboards. I've always played vintage keyboards on everything I do, but they used a lot of different keyboards on the album, like they used the JP or the Jupiter. So I went and bought those keyboards, cause it gave that "Flashing Lights" kind of vibe, you know what I mean? Futuristic music but still sounding like 1981-82, feel good music! So after I laid the keyboards, everybody came to my house and did their vocals, except for Kurupt. On the last day when we were doing that record, me and Kurupt had to go to Atlanta, so we went out there to work with Snoop and DJ Drama.

So Kurupt's is the only verse that wasn't done at my house, we actually did that in Atlanta, but I was still in the room producing the record. That's just a well produced, very fun record and everybody gave it their all. Did you hear that DJ Quik verse on there? Oh my god! I mean I see the blogs where everybody talks, some people love it and some people say "Oh he sounds gay!" You know what though? Hands down, I think that is an excellent verse and Quik served it!

Currently, Terrace is working with fellow L.A native Murs (Murs For President coming soon!!!), The Game, and the legendary Quincy Jones.

Keep ya eyes and ears open... the West is the rise again... West, West Ya'll.

Homeboy On Films: Quantum Of Solace (Preview)

The first teaser trailer from the 22nd film in the James Bond series, Quantum Of Solace. Unlike past Bond flicks, this one pick up around one hour after the last movie, Casino Royale. I'm a big Bond fan (runs in the family), so I can't wait to see this one.

"Understand The Style Is Sorda Crazy...

I be like A Bay Bay, A Bay Bay, A Bay Bay."

I swear that night Key, P and myself must have repeated that line hundred times cracking up. I was on Yahoo checking my e-mail and found they now have the Embed Code for their Nissan Live Sets show. This was the show Key, P, and myself went to about a week before Finding Forever dropped.
FYI- There are a couple times you can see Myself, P, and Key on camera. Can you spot us? Hehehehe........

Go!

LMAO @ The girl that introduced him. That shit was comedy yo.

Drivin' Me Wild

For some odd reason, I remember when hearing this, I thought the keys sounded a like lot Kweli's "Flash Gordon." (FYI- Because I had avoided the leaks of the album, this was the first time I heard a lot of the tracks from Finding Forever).

Aquarius/The Game

NLS Freestyle

I was very suprised that posted this on Yahoo. I orignially posted back after the show from youtube. This is while the crew was reloading the camera to reshoot The People. I wish though they had them on camera doing "Thelonius." It was between songs, with Com on drums and drummer Kareem Riggins spitting Dilla's verse with perfection.

The People feat. Dwele

Com on the second take- "I still think the first people was better." Honestly, he had a point. Dwele had this vocal breakdown while vibin' with band @ the end of the first take which was crazy.

Fan Q&A Part 2

A part of this was cut when this one dude try to pitch his demo to Com. The crowd's (and maybe Common's inside) reaction when dude's tried to pitch his demo: "Pshhhhh!!! This nigga here..."

Alright, the joints from More or Less From Eardrum, Hi-Teknology Vol. 2, and Time from Vol. 3. Has been a great apptizer, not we want the album!!! Fo' real "stop playing with my emotions" (c) Big Worm, release a new album and tour... it's WAY over due; especially with the heat Jeff has been producing lately? Homeboy On Flims: Wanted

Crazy special effects: check. Numerous "Get the fuck outta here!" moments: Check. More headshots than Superhead and Tera Patrick combined: Check.
