I have been wondering when they were going to drop a video for this new Common album. Well, we finally got one. Lovin' the concept of this one. From what I have been hearing, Invincible Summer is still on track to be released next month.

I liked the second one, but they finally getting it right this time. The whole original cast is back for this one. Dropping May 2009.

Angel

I don't understand all the hate for this track. This shit was on repeat for me last Friday night. Some say 'Ye didn't flipped the Gil Scott Heron ("Angel Dust") enough. Man, any producer knows that linking up various parts of one song to make a clean continous loop with your own drums under it can be a pain in the ass. Trust me, it's harder than it may seem. That shit is clean. But I love the vibe on this shit.

Circulate

Out of the couple times I've heard this track flipped (it's a Billy Paul track btw), NOBODY had flipped the actual horns in the bridge, until I heard Don Cannon's flip. This shit is crazy. The actual song, although made almost 3 decades ago, is very approate to what our country is going through right now, and is perfect for the concept of Jeezy's album, entitled The Recession . Jeezy is "on" lyrically on this joint. (especially on the 3rd verse).

Here's the video of Jeezy and Cannon making the joint in the studio and follow after the jump for the download link to the track's MP3.

Buddha J From The Bay

(Coffee House, March 2007)
On the third and final day of my freshman orientation @ Marymount College, I was having lunch in the cafe when a dude approached me about me being a musician. It shocked the hell outta me because I had only been on campus for less then a week, and people already knew my passion. But then again, as I would learn later, word travels fast around that place.

He said he was from the Bay Area, was a singer, s MC, as well as a songwriter and guitarist. I gave him my business card and we exchanged numbers and pounds. Two concerts in one week (The Roots and A Tribe Called Quest) and some good conversation later, Justin, or Buddha J as I called him, quickly became not only one of my primary music collaborators, but one of my closest friends @ The Mount.

Fall 2 Greatness, The Scandylous Flow E.P (Pop N Roll anyone?), to the theatre, to any other activities we got into @ school together, Buddha would be front and center adding his own brand flava to the mix. All the dudes respected him and all the girls loved him. It was cool with me to call him not only my roommate during my first year @ Marymount, but more so, my brother.

So as I'm waking up one early morning about 2 or 3 weeks ago, I see that I had a missed call. I checked my voicemail; and it was Buddha. He sounded geeked like a muthafucka. Why? Because he was now, with his longtime partner in rhyme, West-One, was working with The Iklectics, a local popular Bay Area based production team on the verge of blowing up nationally. Buddha sent me the link for the track the other day, it's called "Time I Cannot Borrow," featuring Buddha singing and West-One on MC duties.

I must say I am VERY PROUD of my friend. The track is bangin' and has the potential to make some noise. Boy have we came along way since those last night H.F.P sessions in Dorm 330. Maybe one day we can all be sitting backstage at Staples Center, about to put on a show for 25 Plus thousand, laugh about all those times. But in until then, the grind continues for both all of us, and the dream lives on everyday in our minds. Soul Claps and Salutes to you my brotha.

Carrying The Torch

Since J. Dilla's death in 2006, we have seen an incredible number of official and unofficial projects released out of respect of the late, great "King Of Beats." This is one that hits closest to home. Dilla's brother Illa J has been working on his own music for a while, even before his brother's death. Many of you may remember Illa for rapping out his brother's parts for the "Won't Do" video. Shit, I know of couple of ya'll had to do a double take and see if that was actually Dilla himself. But because of his brother's untimely death, they never had the opportunity to release anything together until now.

With the help of Dante Ross and his legendary label, Delicious Vinyl, Illa will be releasing his official debut album, "Yancey Boys." Get this, all the beats on this album, are ALL UNRELEASED, never before heard, Dilla beats from his The Ummah period (think of the sound he created for The Pharcyde's Labcabincalifornia, and Tribe's Beats, Rhymes, Life, and The Love Movement, that is what this album is going to sound like).

Now, before you pass judgement and say "Oh, he's just trying to cash in off his brother's name and legacy," take a listen to the first single, "We Here." Lyrically, musically, sonically, Illa J has created that same vibe his brother would gave to this record. Shit, he almost sounds like Dilla when he sings the hook (kinda sounds like his Dilla singing on Com's Nag Champa). I think big brother would be proud. The b-side to the track will be a calabo with Guilty Simpson entitled, "R U Listening," which is an ole to their hometown of Detroit. Both will be released as singles this Monday, August 25th.

BBE's Beat Generation has always been dope series. From Pete Rock's Petestrumentals, to J. Dilla's Welcome 2 Detroit, some of the best beatsmiths in Hip-Hop history has graced BBE's series with excellent projects. This next one is well deserving and WELL OVERDUE. Madlib will be dropping his entry WLIB AM: King of the Wigflip , September 30th. From what I have heard so far (including the beats in this trailer posted above), this one will be a bonified BANGA from beginning to end.

Here is the studio version of "Jockin' Jay-Z." Apparently now, The Blueprint 3 is now going to be produced entirely by Kanye. But knowing how Jay changes his mind in regards to the directions of his album (see the original plan for The Black Album), we'll see how that goes.

Soul Music And Laughter...

In my humble opinion, two of the best medicines in the world. These two where two of the best at these medicines. Ironically enough (or maybe a bit creepy also), Isaac and Bernie just finished a movie together with Samuel L. Jackson called "Soul Men." And that's what these two were, two brothas who communicated in there own way, from the soul. To Bernie and Issac, I say thank you, and send you the most decadent Soul Claps and Salutes.

Californiacation

During the school year, outside of Lakers games, The Boondocks, and Entourage, I really don't watch T.V. So I take it upon myself during the summer to find some new shows I may like. Funny enough, this one was referred to me by my 16 year old sister. Many still be believe that California (specifically Los Angeles) in particular is all "glitz and glamor." Truth be told, while that element exist to an extend, this is a very dysfunctional town. This show very accurately portrays this.

I watched the first episode two nights a go, and ended up spending my whole evening yesterday night watching the remaining 11 episodes from season one On Demand. Yeah, the show is THAT good. The last show on cable to get me hooked like this was during the first season of Entourage, during the summer of 2005.

I never watched the X-Flies growing up (the theme song alone used to and honestly, still scares the shit out of me), but David Duchovny is that dude. He is excellent on this show. The whole cast is incredible. The show is what a great story should be a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. There were scenes where I was feeling for the characters, and there were scenes where I was laughing my ass off. There are so many scenes I want to talk about, but I don't want to give it away. If you have On Demand on your cable box with Showtime, WATCH THIS SHOW ASAP. If you don't, go cop the Season One DVD. The second season stats on Showtime September 21th.

Homeboy On Flims: The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor

Here I am, at the box office of my local AMC theatre with a plastic bag for a change that exactly made up $8.15. This was for my sister's movie ticket. The girl at the box office gave me the "nigga, are you serious" look. The other clerk from the desk walked in the booth and was asked to help count. The dude stopped, looked at her, raised his eyebrow, and calmly stated, "I'm not counting that," and walked right out to start tearing tickets again. The combination of that bag a change, $7.00 in cash, and $4.50 from my debt card helped paid for the $20.00 movie tickets, ending what had to be the most complicating financial transaction in movie theatre history. After all this, This movie better be good.

The third jump off in The Mummy series. Over all, not a bad flick. Is it better than the first two? No, but it's a worthy sequel. Jet Li was not a bad addition as well. The effect of course WAY over the top (what do you expect from the same director of The Fast And The Furious and XXX?) and comedy was present like the other movies. Apparently their is going to be another sequel... please.... DON'T DO IT!!!! I think the series is cool right here. Like Brendan Frasier said in the flim, appearantly Universal doesn't get the idea of "Rest In Peace." But then again, when money and business are invovled, "you can't tell no one nuthin" (c) Mr. West.

Sunday Night Sound Session

I have always enjoyed DJ Hyphen and J. Moore's show. They always have dope exclusive interviews. Here are two I caught on Youtube. If you're in the Seattle area, you can catch their show on Kube 93 FM. If not (like myself), check out their website to download their show as a podcast.
